đ€Big Promises, Bigger Splashes đ€ Free Swimming Lessons for All Welsh Kids?

We donât usually dive into politics⊠but when someone starts offering free swimming lessons for every school child in Wales, you bet weâre doing a full-on cannonball into the conversation. đŠ
So, whatâs all the fuss about? đ§
Well, Plaid Cymru just made a splashy pledge ahead of the May 2026 Senedd election: if elected, theyâll roll out a National School Swimming and Water Safety Programme. Thatâs right, free lessons for every primary school child in Years 4 and 5.
Free. Swimming. Lessons.
You had us at âfree.â đ
đĄ Why It Matters (And Why Itâs Not Just Another Campaign Slogan)
Drowning isnât just scary, itâs one of the leading causes of accidental death in Wales. In fact, Wales has double the UK average when it comes to accidental drowning.
Let that sink in. (But not literally. Because weâre swimmers. And floating is kind of our thing.)

Earlier this year, a heartbreaking inquest into the tragic death of 15-year-old David Ejimofor highlighted just how critical water safety education is. The coroner made it clear: without proper intervention, this could happen again.
And yet, in 2024, only 35%Â of Welsh kids aged 7â11 can swim. In Cardiff, that drops to just 16%. Thatâs not a stat, itâs a wake-up call.
Enter Plaid Cymru with their waterproof policy idea.
đŹ So, Whatâs the Plan? Free Swimming Lessons?
Plaidâs programme would include 20 swimming and water safety lessons during school time for all primary pupils in Years 4 and 5. That means every child, regardless of postcode or parent budget, gets access to essential life-saving skills.
Think of it like a national rollout of water wings, except way more effective, and no squeaky armholes.
Heledd Fychan MS, Plaidâs spokesperson for Sport (and clearly someone who gets it), summed it up perfectly:
âTeaching our young people how to swim and be safe in and around water is a necessity, not a ânice to haveâ.â
đ We couldnât agree more.
đ What This Means for Us at RKL Swims
At RKLSwims, weâre already working hard to give every child the skills and confidence they need to stay safe in water, and have fun doing it. But not every family has access. Not every child gets the chance. And thatâs the problem this pledge is tackling.
So while we donât wear party rosettes (they clash with our swimsuits), weâre 100% behind anything that puts swimming lessons into the core of a childâs education.
Because hereâs what we see every single day:
đ§ Swimming helps kids grow in confidence
đ It improves mental and physical health
đ And yes, it literally saves lives
Whether itâs learning to float, swim front crawl, or just not panic in water, these are skills that last a lifetime.
đ Itâs Not Just a Win for Safety; Itâs a Win for Health
Plaid Cymru isnât just floating this idea as a safety fix. Itâs part of a bigger plan for public health: prevention, not just treatment. Getting kids active early doesnât just help them swim better; it sets them up for healthier, more active lives.
And that, friends, is the kind of future we want to be part of. đ
𫶠A Shoutout to Swim Wales
Even Swim Wales gave this policy a big, splashy thumbs up. CEO Fergus Feeney put it perfectly:
âBeing able to swim is a life skill that every Welsh child deserves to have... Without urgent action, tens of thousands of Welsh children every year could leave primary school unable to stay safe in, on, or around water.â
We couldnât have scripted it better ourselves.
đ Final Thoughts from the Shallow End
Hereâs the thing: we donât do politics, but if politics wants to throw swimming lessons into the mix, weâre all over it like toddlers on pool noodles.
So, whether Plaid Cymru makes it to the podium or not in 2026, we hope this starts a wave of change that gets every single child the support they need to be safe, happy, and confident in the water.
Because learning to swim isnât a luxury, itâs a life skill.
Until then, weâll be doing what we do best:
Helping nervous kids become confident swimmers.
Helping confident swimmers become water-safe humans. Whilst making a splash in our corner of Wales. đ

Awesome little read, and it's great to see the bigger parties are noticing the obvious problems in our community rather than disputing the minor stuff! Here's to a brighter and better swimming future!
